NEW FAMILY CENTER CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN and UNVEILING OF
FAMILY CENTER MURAL IN MASON SQUARE
Springfield, MA December 7, 2009 A press conference announcing the beginning construction of the new Family Center in Mason Square has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at The Children's Study Home, 30 Sherman Street, Springfield, MA. During the conference a new family themed mural will be unveiled at the location. Speaking at the event will be Steve McCafferty, Executive Director of The Children's Study Home and Mayor Dominic Sarno, Mayor City of Springfield.
The new Family Center will meet the changing needs of today's families while developing services and resources to address the stresses placed on parents and children including poverty, unemployment, violence, substance use, and difficulties keeping children safe and healthy. Several family oriented programs of the Study Home will now be administered out of the new center.
"The center will focus on the strengths and resiliency of each youth, parent and family," stated Steve McCafferty. "Services will have the goal of increased competence and confidence for youth to reach their goals and potential, for parents to be positive caregivers for their children, and for families to sustain stability and safety," he explained.
The Study Home received a $50,000 CDBG grant from the City to help renovate the building to be used for the Family Center on the Sherman Street campus of The Children Study Home. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated that "these monies will help off set budget challenges so that The Children Study Home can continue to provide front line services to those children and families in need. As a caring city, we are glad to help."
Immediately following the announcement will be the unveiling of a new mural depicting a family theme. The mural was sketched by Don Blanton, community artist and art instructor of Mill Pond High School, a school of the Study Home. The mural was painted under his direction by the Urban Plunge program of Western New England College in September and has been kept covered since that day.
